between eros and thanatos—sex and death—lulu shines, stars in her hair.
we all want to define lulu. she offends us. she doesn’t. she’s real. she’s not. why do we need to define? what is the threat she poses? what are the edges of language in sex?
—but lulu is dead, now what. this is a play about a dead woman. are you a dead woman?—
is there still space for politically-incorrect eros in a theatre of political correctness? what does it mean to be post-lulu? what died with her?
we’re staging a revolution in the rehearsal hall—the director’s putting on the wig and lulu’s directing him, facing off against the female performers who have played lulu before him. games of representation. questions of authorship. we meet frank wedekind and the sex worker who inspired lulu as we strip the layers off and ask, whose story is this? who has the right to tell this story and why?

alanna dunlop is a dramaturg, director and stage manager. she is the co-founder of raw matter, an interdisciplinary performance collective based in the city. recent credits include idle lessons: cycle 1. alanna is a graduate of york university where she studied devised theatre and dramaturgy. she lives and works in toronto.

sedina fiati is a black, queer, femme butterfly, born and raised in toronto’s west. she is a multidisciplinary performer, creator, producer and activist with a BFA in music theatre. most recent credits: burlesque (les femmes fatales burlesque, unapologetic burlesque), 22 (creator, piece of mine festival), love’s labours lost (performer, dauntless city theatre), bad luck bank robbers (assistant director, 4th line theatre), 30 people watching (producer, subtle vigilance collective), LULU v.1 (the red light district). sedina is mostly kind, but can throw shade sometimes. she hopes to leave the world better than she found it.

susanna is a toronto based theatre maker. her work is feminist and anti-imperial. she interrogates socio-economic-gender power relations and their perversions. she works a lot with ted witzel—most recently in residency in berlin where they made a lot of versions of LULU and danced in a lot of clubs. her company, paradigm productions, launched her award-winning play, stencilboy and other portraits, and recently ALL THE WAYS YOU SCARE ME (36th rhubarb festival). next she’s uniting with the howland company in residency at the canadian stage company to workshop take rimbaud, a post-dramatic adaption of arthur rimbaud’s poem, a season in hell. she is a 2016 nominee for the k.m hunter artist award for theatre. www.susannafournier.com

chala hunter is a graduate of the acting program at the national theatre school of canada and also studied at the university of toronto (BA in drama and french). recent credits include wormwood (tarragon), the supine cobbler, by jill connell (itcouldstillhappen), travesties (the segal centre), susanna fournier’s all the ways you scare me at (rhubarb 2015), the stronger variations (theatre rusticle/buddies) and canadian stage’s as you like it and titus andronicus. other stage credits include three more sleepless nights (2014 playwrights project), scheherazade (nextstage 2014) and the english language premiere of the ishow (summerworks), necessary angel’s tout comme elle (luminato). she co-wrote and performed fresh water with nathan barrett (orpheum annex & videofag). she was one of four winners of solo collective theatre’s 2013 emerging writers competition, and her play, amy, la reine des morts was showcased in french, at zone homa. she is thrilled to be working on lulu v.4, and is always so happy to be performing at buddies. bisous.

wesley mckenzie is a lighting, sound and video designer in toronto. previous credits with the red light district include: the marquise of O— (summerworks festival and hatch residency) and lulu v.2 (2015 rhubarb festival). other credits include: heretic (soup can theatre), the fatal gaze (uoft opera department), three women mourn the apocalypse (old norman productions), barefoot in the park and wait until dark (classic theatre festival), fruit fruit mouth mouth (illume collective), kata (theatre parrallax), intangible trappings (lester trips) and i was once on fire (little black afro). wesley has worked with house of rebels theatre on both their mysteries in transit and murmurs podcast series. he is currently working with the canadian opera company as the wally russell lighting design intern.

daniela began her artistic career as a dancer. she trained for 18 years in five disciplines of movement (ballet, point, jazz, modern, tap). she was accepted into york university’s acting conservatory where she completed her BFA. she was cast as arturo ui in bertolt brecht’s chicago gangster play the resistible rise of arturo ui under the direction of ted witzel. continuing theatre, she most recently played the title role in the new canadian play i am marguerite. she is ted witzel’s directing assistant during his residency for his buddies in bad times residency project, LULU // aspects of a femme fatale. daniela recently wrapped filming her skit show food n’ money (due april 2016), which she wrote, produced, directed and starred in. daniela currently resides NOWHERE.
aurora stewart de peña

aurora stewart de peña is a writer, director and ad strategist. she runs birdtown & swanville with nika mistruzzi & mark aikman. upcoming work includes direction of julia lederer’s the best plan for living happily at videofag in april, and the writing of even this old town was a forest at the theatre centre in october. personal motto is “black clothes, gold heart.” she only ever performs for susanna/ted.

(taedon witztl doesn’t live here anymore). ######## ted makes plays. usually they’re by dead people. not always. some of them are by susie. she’s not dead, but she’s still a lot of fun to work with. ######## right now he makes plays in toronto. he has also done it in berlin, paris, milan, stuttgart, vancouver, montreal, stratford, ottawa, ingolstadt, baden-baden, and bad hersfeld, which is a small town with a lot of sheep in it. well, near it. ######## he has a company where he makes plays with friends, called the red light district. those plays are usually about sex & ethics & sexual ethics. that’s what you get with a name like that. this usually involves a lot of late-night games of dramaturgical whack-a-mole with lauren. ######## ted has a so-called spider-plant on his desk that is taking an awfully long time to make spiders.
